It is a difficult tightrope to walk when producing art
that is 'of the moment' yet acknowledges its past. Only a certain type of artist can
concoct the perfect blend -- modern, yet non-alienating, traditional, yet not anachronistic.
Such an artist is Arthur Blythe. Cut from the same cloth as Earl Bostic, Lou Donaldson and
Hank Crawford, Blythe was cited by JAZZTIMES Magazine as "the magic figure of reconciliation,
the force for consensus, that modern jazz has been looking for in vain since the death of John
Coltrane in 1967." For his Savant debut Arthur offers a live gig performed at the famed
Amsterdam jazz Mecca, the Bim Huis. Joining him is drummer/producer Cecil Brooks III and
the wildly imaginative Bob Stewart on tuba. The unlikely trio produces a wide variety of
tone colors and textures and swings out mightily. Featuring tunes by Don Pullen,
Bob Stewart and Arthur himself, this exuberant record will attract a great deal of
attention from press and radio alike.
Arthur Blythe- saxophone; Bob Stewart- tuba; Cecil Brooks III- drums
Tracks: One Mint Julip; Miss Nancy; Odessa; Rambler; Spirits In The Field;
Lenox Avenue Breakdown; Ah George, We Hardly Knew You; Break Tune #2

Some cats just seem to fall out of bed swinging, full of fire and forever seeking
those flames. Call them the good groove merchants, and make sure you include Cecil Brooks III
in this exclusive coterie. One thing you can always count on when Cecil Brooks sits down to the
drums, regardless of the context, the music will snap, crackle, pop, and most of all...it'll swing!
The five extended selections on this record are an apt reflection of this agreeable intersection
of an ebullient leader, a collection of skillful players, and comfort of place. Featuring John
Hicks, perhaps the hardest-hitiing pianist in jazz today (and one of the busiest), Don Braden,
questionably one of the most underestimated tenor players of our time and others, Cecil puts
the band through their paces before a full house at New York's famed jazz venue, Sweet Basil.
Cecil BrooksIII- drums & leader; Don Braden-tenor saxophone;
Riley Mullins- trumpet; John Hicks- piano; Dwayne Dolphin- bass.
Tracks: Bounce; Mood Swing; Chelsea Bridge; But Beautiful; Vamp for Cho.

Papa John DeFrancesco

By now most organ aficionados know very well where B-3 burner Joey DeFrancesco got his undeniably
soulful quality from. It's strictly in the genes and flowing through the bloodlines of the DeFrancesco family.
The deep blue statements inherent in his playing come directly from Papa John, the proud patriarch of the
DeFrancesco family. "We were just going for some grooves and having a fun time with it," says the elder
DeFrancesco about his fifth cd (including HighNote's Hip Cake Walk HCD 7071 and also a co-led session with Joey,
All In The Family HCD 7021). That loose, good-spirited attitude permeates all eights tracks on this recipe for soul
jazz cooked up by Papa John and his crew, which includes oldest son Johnny on guitar.
