HighNote HCD 7070 Charles Earland Tribute Band Keepers Of the Flame $13.00 Order
The difference between a 'memorial' and 'tribute' may seem trivial but the fact of the matter is a memorial looks back to the past, where a tribute is very much of the present. Here is a collection sidemen who knew, loved and worked with the Mighty Burner himself, Charles Earland. Guitarist Pat Martino, who played some of his earliest gigs with Charles' band, is on hand along with Joey DeFrancesco, the heir apparent to the Earland crown. Earland's regular band alumni Eric Alexander, James Rotondi, Bob DeVos, Vince Ector and Kevin Jones round out the ensemble. Rather than look back with tear-filled eyes, this group has decided to pay tribute to the musical legacy Charles left behind which is very much alive and as vibrant today as it was when Charles was at the keyboard. "Keepers of the Flame" is an appropriate title - for these musicians keep the sound of the Mighty Burner at high heat and burning brightly for all to enjoy. CHARLES EARLAND TITLES: Blowing the Blues Away - HCD 7010; Cookin' With the Mighty Burner - HCD 7014; Stomp! - HCD 7037; If Only for One Night (w/ Najee) - HCD 7092 - W/ Eric Alexander tenor sax; Joey DeFrancesco, organ;

HighNote HCD 7092 Charles Earland with Najee If Only For One Night $13.00 Order
Sadly, this was to be the last studio session completed by Charles "The Mighty Burner" Earland but it shows that Charles was in fine fettle and expanding his musical horizons right up until the end. Inviting the smooth jazz star Najee to appear with him on this album might at first seem like an odd pairing, but that trepidation lasts only until one hears the first track. They come charging out of the gate in great style, with Najee alluding to Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" before settling into a driving rendition of "My Favorite Things." With Melvin Sparks funky guitar leading the rhythm section "If Only For One Night" is not a memorial to a great musician, but rather a testimonial to Charles' creative, exploratory spirit that will keep the "Burner" brightly lit in the jazz world for years to come. Charles Earland- organ; Najee - saxophone; Melvin Sparks - guitar; Buddy Williams - drums; Gary Fritz - percussion Tracks: My Favorite Things; My Love; My Blues Is Funky; Keep The Faith; If Only For One Night; Smoke; All My Tomorrows; Just For You; Summertime. |

HighNote HCD 7067 Teddy Edwards Ladies Man $13.00 Order
Throughout jazz there have been a number of players who chose to remain in one locale to practice their art. Harry Connick Sr., for example, has never left New Orleans and is arguably a finer musician than his more famous son. Rusty Bryant is another (see HCD 7074). Though Teddy Edwards chose to immerse himself in L.A.'s lucrative TV and radio scene he also toured through the '60s and '70s with the likes of Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Hines, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown and a host of other jazz notables. This earned him an international reputation and allowed him to keep his roots in his hometown. Today Teddy is the Senior Statesman on the tenor sax, and with this record, brings his wealth of experience to tunes titled with women's names. These are not all slow, smoochy ballads - included here are chop-busters, such as Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" and the straight-ahead swing of Duke Pearson's "Jeannine". w/ Eddie Allen- trumpet; Ronnie Mathews- piano; Chip Jackson- bass; Chip White- drums Tracks: Jeannine; Rosetta; Ruby; Candy; Saskia; Diane; Donna Lee; Marie; Laura; Rosalie |

Have a Close Encounter of the Jazz Kind with tenor icons Teddy Edwards and Houston Person! Teddy's understated, subdued statements contrast nicely with Houston's big, 'happy-kid' sound on such great tunes as, THE BREEZE AND I, PENNIES FROM HEAVEN, BLUE AND SENTIMENTAL, GHOST OF A CHANCE and others. This Rudy Van Gelder recording is certain to receive major airplay. Teddy Edwards- tenor saxophone; Houston Person- tenor saxophone; Stan Hope- piano; Ray Drummond- bass; Kenny Washington- drums Tracks: Twisted; Blue and Sentimental; Pennies From Heaven; Night Train; I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance; The Breeze and I; Little Girl blue. |

HighNote HCD 7087 Russell Gunn Blue On The D.L. $13.00 Order
Just when you think you've got Russell Gunn figured out, he moves on to the next town, much like the fabled Wild West gunslingers alluded to in his 1994 debut title, Young Gunn. On the cutting edge of the latest developments in music, including Hip-Hop-jazz-fusion, Russell has not lost sight of the fact that he is the latest in the line of trumpet masters that stretch back into what seems to be the impossibly distant past. Backed by the best young players on the scene today - J.D. Allen, Mark Whitfield, Eric Revis, et al - Russell delivers this blues-based jazz repertory with a fierceness of attack, an urgency of message and a probing harmonic curiosity. It is refreshing to find jazz of such aggressive tension and darkness amid today's 'smooth' and 'techno' trends. Russell Gunn- trumpet; J.D. Allen- saxophone; Orrin Evans- piano; Mark Whitfield- guitar; Eric Revis- bass; Montez Coleman- drums Tracks: Sir John; Minor Mood; Cheryl; Blues on the D.L.; Brian's Bounce; Kelly Blue; J.D.'s Revenge; No Blues; When It Comes |
HighNote HCD 7056 Russell Gunn Smokin Gunn $13.00 Order
Just when you think you've got Russell Gunn figured out, he moves on to the next town, much like the fabled Wild West gunfighters alluded to in his 1994 debut title, Young Gunn. A fiery trumpet player, imaginative composer, forceful leader, and sturdy sideman as Wynton Marsalis discovered, when he hired Russell for "Blood on the Fields" Gunn, just 28, has continually surprised audiences with his audaciousness and imagination. His last album for HighNote, Love Requiem, was a high concept suite about romantic love and loss. His follow-up, a daring effort, took on hip-hop and world beat. On this new effort, Gunn has a showdown with straight-ahead, burn-your-face-off jazz, played by a quintet that knows just how to get where it wants to go, and how to take you with them. Gunn handles his horn with style. Deep listeners will hear a kinship right away with the great Booker Little, in the kid's fierceness of attack, urgency of message and probing harmonic curiosity. How refreshing, in these days of "smooth" and "tech" everything, to hear jazz with some real aggressive tension and a little darkness. Russell Gunn- trumpet; Bruce Williams- alto saxophone; Marc Cary- piano; Eric Revis- bass; Terreon Gully- drums Tracks: The Paris Masses Begin; The San Domingo Masses Complete; Amnesia; El's Kitchen; Groid; Yvette; Memory of Waterford; The Beach; Delfeayo's Dilemma; Crescent. |
HighNote HCD 7020 Russell Gunn Love Requiem $13.00 Order
Russell Gunn having already established himself as one of the finest young players in the jazz world today, here pushes the limits of jazz composition to the max. "Love Requiem" is a multi-movement suite which blurs the boundaries between jazz and other musical genres and offers new alternatives to the age-old problem of how a composer is to express himself in music. Surrounded by a sympathetic group of colleagues, including Stefon Harris, Mark Turner, Greg Tardy and the dynamic Cindy Blackman, Russell blazes into new jazz territory without looking back.
