'Papa' John DeFrancesco
Hip Cake Walk

'Papa' John DeFrancesco is a Hammond B-3 player from Philadelphia. That tells you a lot. You know his groove will be cooking and funky with strong jazz overtones. You know you will hear echoes of the past organ masters Groove Holmes, Jimmy Smith, etc. Papa John's progeny is the top organ gun today, the incredible Joey DeFrancesco. Does the apple fall far from the tree? On this CD, Joey plays trumpet, Bootsie Barnes, a Philly tenor, are solidly set up by Melvin Sparks on guitar and Byron Landham on drums. Another contributor is John DeFrancesco, the other son, on guitar. The repertoire reads like a top 10 of organ tunes, "Freddie the Freeloader", "Song for My Father", Don Patterson's "Hip Cake Walk& and other favorites that are braised by the searing grooves of Papa John DeFrancesco's B-3.
