There is a happening jazz room near Columbia University in Manhattan called Smoke, which wisely sets aside Tuesday nights for Organ Grooves. For nearly a decade, Mike LeDonne has been the primary player to sit on the organ bench and for his fifth Savant recording he takes what is pretty much the Smoke house band into the studio to refine and expand upon the music they create in the club. On THE GROOVER, Mike LeDonne is joined by tenor sax player Eric Alexander, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and drummer Joe Farnsworth. The group alternately burns, swings, shines and grooves through nine standards, originals and jazz tunes, including a new and never-recorded song, "Little Mary," by the great Benny Golson. The art of jazz organ never sounded better and in these eight inspired hands, continues to be a vital and driving musical force.
