Once again, John Hicks has hit another long ball for HighNote Records. Previously John has given us his thoughts on pianists/composers Billy Strayhorn, Erroll Garner & Mary Lou Williams. On this outing he turns his attention to the music of Sonny Clark. Clark is one of those cult figures in jazz, dying young, leaving a small but musically significant body of work behind. Not wanting to play up the legend, John concentrates on the music weaving a strand of musical pearls from Sonny's musical gems. Of course, John is not content to just "play the changes". He gives us a handful of original compositions that take Sonny's musical personae and refracts it through his own creative genius making for the most personal of 'tribute' records.
