Following hard on the heels of his previous Jimmy Smith homage, "The Champ", (HCD 7032), Joey is back in the ring for a second round. Joey still had more to say on the Jimmy Smith repertoire and brings out ten tunes with him to the middle of the musical ring and cooks through them with a white heat from first note to last. "Back at the Chicken Shack", "The Sermon", "I'm an Old Cowhand", and others written or recorded by Smith, are refracted through Joey's improvisatory genius and emerge, not as dusty eulogies to records past, but as exciting, vibrant works in a constantly-evolving art form.
