Musical collaborations between vocalists and instrumentalists are fairly common in jazz. One can count on merely half a hand, however, those collaborations where the vocalist and jazzman could support, compliment and embellish the other's thoughts as if second nature: Billie Holiday/Lester Young, Etta Jones/Houston Person and perhaps one or two more. To that list we must add Irene Reid and Charles Earland. This, the third joint outing for the duo, finds them in a series of tunes tailor made for them both. Dinah Washington's "Long John Blues" (aka "The Dentist") and "If I Never Get to Heaven", "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean", Fats Domino's mega-hit, "I'm Walkin'" and others get the 'Uptown treatment from Charlie and Irene. The usual suspects are back for this session, Eric Alexander, James Rotondi and Greg Rockingham. This time out, Charles has added another tenor in the person of Mike Karn, giving the whole proceeding a little big band feel. Get on the line to buy your subway tokens, and come "Uptown" with Irene and Charles. You're in for quite a ride!
