Eric Alexander
Alexander The Great
$13.00
Order
Alexander is one of those rare artists who can assimilate the best qualities and morph them into something uniquely their own. With the phrasing of Hank Mobley, Dexter Gordon's melodic sense, Sonny Stitt's rhythmic thrust and the harmonic subtlety of George Coleman, no wonder Eric is one of the busiest tenor-men on the scene today. Here, Eric employs his former boss, the Mighty Burner himself, Charles Earland on a cookin' session captured at the famed Van Gelder studio. Besides Earland, Eric is joined by the popular guitarist, Peter Bernstein, trumpet colleague James Rotondi and Joe Farnsworth on drums. Eric and the band show their all-encompassing musical proclivities by covering tunes as diverse as Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", Fletcher Henderson's "Soft Wind", Chaka Kahn's "Through the Fire" plus some hard-driving tunes by Eric and Peter Bernstein.

Rusty Bryant is one of those legendary names in jazz, much like Teddy Edwards, who never gained widespread popularity and acceptance because of their basically sedentary lifestyle. Rusty did, however, have a few moments in teh sun, recording for Dot Records in the late 50's, hooking up with Prestige from 1968-1974, playing with Groove Holmes and touring with Big Maybelle, Erskine Hawkins, The Drifters and others. These recordings post-date Bryant's years at Prestige and cognoscenti agree, Rusty never sounded better. None of these recordings have been available since their original issue on LP more than twenty years ago. HighNote Records continues to mine the incredible wealth of material that documents the famous and the forgotten names in jazz with this important release.

Just when you think you've got Russell Gunn figured out, he moves on to the next town, much like the fabled Wild West gunfighters alluded to in his 1994 debut title, Young Gunn. A fiery trumpet player, imaginative composer, forceful leader, and sturdy sideman as Wynton Marsalis discovered, when he hired Russell for "Blood on the Fields" Gunn, just 28, has continually surprised audiences with his audaciousness and imagination. His last album for HighNote, Love Requiem, was a high concept suite about romantic love and loss. His follow-up, a daring effort, took on hip-hop and world beat. On this new effort, Gunn has a showdown with straight-ahead, burn-your-face-off jazz, played by a quintet that knows just how to get where it wants to go, and how to take you with them. Gunn handles his horn with style. Deep listeners will hear a kinship right away with the great Booker Little, in the kid's fierceness of attack, urgency of message and probing harmonic curiosity. How refreshing, in these days of "smooth" and "tech" everything, to hear jazz with some real aggressive tension and a little darkness.

Coleman Hawkin's great solo on "Body and Soul", deservedly a classic, is enshrined on records for repeating listening. But haven't you ever wondered how Hawk played the tune on other nights? Maybe, as good as that recorded solo was, just maybe on one inspired night, he surpassed even that effort. Here is a selection of Hawk's rare live performances dating from 1950 - 58 which contains some of his best known tunes: "Bean and the Boys," "Body and Souls," "The Man I Love," "Disorder at the Border," and others. They make for fascinating listening when compared to the commercial recordings and show that there is nothing quite like "live" jazz. Hawk's flock swoops in with the likes of Pee Wee Russell, Charlie Shavers, Johnny Acea, J.C. Higginbotham and others. This is rare, but well-done, Coleman Hawkins is an important addition to the discography.

Grammy Nominee Etta Jones stepped in front of the microphone again with a batch of tunes by the American songsmith Sammy Cahn under her arm. Along with her long-time friend and collaborator, Houston Person, Etta is backed by the sensitive piano of Norman Simmons, the guitar of Russell Malone and, adding a unique spectrum of color to the record, Tom Aalfs on violin and Steve Turre on trombone. Of course, the most popular songs by "King Cahn" are here, including "Until the Real Thing Comes Along," "It's Magic," and "All the Way." Etta also offers the rarely-heard "Put 'em in a Box" and "Saturday Night is the Loneliest Night of the Week," a tune which once flooded the airwaves but now, inexplicably, is heard only occasionally. You haven't heard the Sammy Cahn songbook until you've heard it according to Etta Jones!

Buddy Johnson (1915-1977) is one of the true unsung heroes of jazz. Enjoying immense popularity in his time, after his death most of his songs and recordings were scandalously overlooked. Some of his songs are beloved standards of the American Popular Music repertoire ("Since I Fell For You", "Save Your Love For Me") others have not been heard since their initial recordings. The magnificent Etta Jones pays tribute to the songs of her mentor and former boss in the first album devoted exclusively to his music. Houston Person and Norman Simmons are also on hand. Rare repertoire and haunting performances by Ms. Jones make this the jewel in the crown of her already impressive discography.

Sheila Jordan & Cameron Brown
I've Grown Accustomed to the Bass
$13.00

One of the most consistently creative of all jazz singers, Sheila Jordan has always expressed the full range of her emotions with her voice. She is one of the few vocalists who can improvise logical lyrics (which often rhyme!); she is a superb scat singer and is also an emotional interpreter of ballads. Her latest HighNote release finds her in the unusual duo of voice and upright bass. Sheila herself says, "I always gravitate toward the bass, it's my favorite instrument. My voice is more suited to the bass than any of the other instruments. There are ranges in my voice that I can't sing with a full rhythm section sometimes. There are delicate parts of my voice that for some reason I can't hear or feel all the time when I'm with a full rhythm section." A wildly imaginative program only adds to this attractive release which will please the legion of devoted Sheila Jordan fans.

Sheila Jordan is one of the world's leading exponents of vocal improvisation. Not content to sing the same well- planned 'improvisation' on a tune night after night, Sheila's skill at extemporizing makes each performance something new and truly exciting. Charlie Parker himself was a fan of Sheila's, admiring her unique way of reshaping lines and her soulful identification with every word. Now, after a five-year recording hiatus, Sheila is back on CD and she has selected a program of pop standards and Be-Bop classics by the likes of Don Cherry, Ernie Henry, Jimmy Webb, Rodgers & Hart and others. With sensitive backing by the Steve Kuhn Trio, Sheila shows once again why she is a member of the Royal Family of Jazz Vocalists.

The list of singers who hang out the shingle bearing the claim "Jazz Singer" is a long one indeed. It is cut down to size, however, when you include those vocalists who truly improvise their performances, those who take the risk of spontaneous extemporization. At the top of this list certainly sits Mark Murphy who, together perhaps with only Sheila Jordan, is a true improvising/vocalist/musician. Back in the studio for his long-time friend Joe Fields for the first time since their days with MUSE Records, Mark is in fine fettle and turns his attentions to pop standards ( "Old Black Magic", "Why Was I Born"), as well as jazz classics (Jimmy Rowles "Peacocks", Cedar Walton's "Life's Mosaic"). When the jury reconvenes on Mark Murphy, he will stand as one of the most influential and talented vocalists in jazz and "Some Time Ago" may just be his finest recording.

Fats Waller was a blazing star, one of the very few besides Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman who could guarantee a packed house, a large radio audience or a hit record in 1930s and 1940s jazz. He wrote two of the most durable songs in American music, "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose", as well as other gems such as "Squeeze Me," "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling," "Black and Blue" and "The Jitterbug Waltz." In addition, he was one helluva piano player. HighNote offers a selection of rare, unsaturated Fats playing and singing at the piano and even a few organ solos thrown in (could Fats Waller be the first great jazz organist, spawning the likes of Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson, Charles Earland and others?). Fats was at the peak of his powers and his popularity when these recordings were made in 1939. Wesla Whitfield continues her traversal through the Great American Songbook with this, her latest recording, devoted to the songs of the prolific Jimmy McHugh. While not a household name like Gershwin or Porter, McHugh's songs may just have been on more lips at the time of their creation than those by the previously-mentioned composers. Not as public a figure as Gershwin or Porter, McHugh was happy to quietly turn out tunes that appealed to the widest spectrum of listeners, as is evidenced from the program Wesla has assembled. True classics here include "Don't Blame Me," "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me" along with two previously-unrecorded songs. Hear why Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times called Wesla Whitfield, "one of the finest masters of popular singing"; hear why PEOPLE Magazine devoted 5 full pages to her and why she was the darling of NPR's "All Things Considered".

Whitfield, called "one of the finest masters of popular singing" by the Los Angeles Times, turns her prodigious talents to the phenomenal body of work by the team of Rodgers and Hart. Perhaps no other songwriting team caught the perfect balance between words and music as did Rodgers and Hart. Wesla's (to quote the Chicago Tribune) "lovely instrument, sure technique, novel way with a phrase and deep understanding of lyrics" breathe new meaning into these gems of The Great American Songbook. Favorites like "You Took Advantage of Me," "Thou Swell" and "Easy to Remember" rub elbows with seldom-heard jewels such as "You're Nearer," "He Was Too Good to Me" and others. You haven't really heard Rodgers and Hart until you've heard their tunes given the Wesla Whitfield treatment.

Pres in Europe

More recordings from the closely guarded vaults of the legendary Onyx Records (see HighNote's previous releases by Art Tatum, Don Byas, Hot Lips Page and Lucky Thompson). PRES IN EUROPE features two unforgettable sets of late Lester circa 1956 (the year of the great recording, Jazz Giants of 1956) when Pres' playing was at its most communicative and introverted. Here he shines on a selection of standards and two of his signature tunes, "Lester Leaps In" and "Lester's European Blues". These recordings have been unavailable since their initial release on LP in 1973 and have been completely remastered and presented in the best possible sound with newly updated and exhaustive liner notes by Dan Morgenstern.

Lester Young- saxophone

Tracks: Lester Leaps In; These Foolish Things; There Will Never Be Another You; Lester's European Blues; Lullaby of Birdland; Polka Dots and Moonbeams; Lester Leaps In.

Jazz That Cooks

When asked by a society matron what swing was, Fats Waller replied, "Lady, if you has to ask - you ain't got it." What he was saying was that swing cannot be defined. It is that indefinable something, that momentum and drive that some have and some don't. This CD has it in abundance. It is slammin'. It is foot stompin'. It is all that you listen to jazz for in the first place...uplifting.

Artists Included: Joey DeFrancesco; Randy Johnston; Houston Person; Jimmy Ponder; Charles Earland; Irene Reid; Teddy Edwards; Red Holloway

Tracks: Slammin' At Slims; Blues For the Millennium; Sweet Sucker; James Street; Put It Where You Want It; Big Fat Daddy; Midnight Creeper; One Eyed Man; Snu-Fu.
