From Frank Morgan's opening a cappella strains of the bridge to "Georgia On My Mind," we know we are in the presence of one of the supreme masters of the saxophone. Hailed as early as his late-teens as a likely heir apparent to Charlie Parker, Frank Morgan has mellowed and grown over the years. Captured live on three triumphant evenings at New York's The Jazz Standard, Morgan's sweetly astringent sound, and his mastery of bebop, ballads, and modality remains incontestable. Morgan has previously recorded only one of the eight tunes on the collection. With his close friends and frequent collaborators George Cables, Curtis Lundy and Billy Hart providing the ideal accompaniment throughout Frank Morgan returns to the muchdeserved spotlight. In the album's liner notes, Frank is quoted as saying, "With me, man, every day is just a joy." With City Nights, Frank generously shares some of that joy with us.
