Cedar Walton wears his jazz legend status well. He has a warm, engaging personality to go with an enormous talent. He's been a steady contributor to the language of modern jazz for more than fifty years and he hasn't lost a step when it comes to delivering a rewarding listening experience. With his saxophonist of choice these days, Vincent Herring, heard here on tenor rather than the usual alto, Cedar is back in the quartet genre and seems inspired by the pleasure of hearing his music in that format, with so much heft and hue. With Buster Williams on bass and Willie Jones III on drums Cedar offers a program of standards, jazz tunes and revisits a few of his own originals from his most fertile compositional period, all recorded at the famed Rudy Van Gelder Recording Studio.
