Cedar Walton shows off his new HighNote home with his label debut album "Promise Land". A defining voice in jazz since the late 1950s, Cedar's keyboard has added color and support to the bop organizations of such illustrious names as Kenny Dorham, J.J. Johnson and Art Blakey, where he was a Jazz Messenger for three years alongside Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. Nothing hones a pianist's harmonic invention the way accompanying vocalists does, and Cedar has done his share of that too, laying down just the right changes for Etta Jones, Abbey Lincoln and others. But it is as a leader that Cedar Walton has made his most important contributions to jazz and he continues the tradition for HighNote. Here Cedar is joined by the outstanding sax and flute of Vincent Herring, his long-time associate, bassist Dave Williams and rhythm-man Kenny Washington. Cedar's compositions have entered the standard repertory and there is a fine representation of them included here along with three classics - the haunting "Darn That Dream," the beautiful "Body and Soul" and the Jerome Kern chestnut, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."
